Description

Deep Elem was our very first Blend, made with a recipe given to us by Mary McNeil of McClelland Tobacco Co. Sadly, Deep Elem was discontinued due to the closing of McClelland and the loss of thier #805 Cavendish which was a unique and integral ingredient.

Terrapin Station pays homage to Deep Elem. While we could not match the fine cut of McClelland 805 nor the subtle sweet top note, by combining various grades and colors of cavendish we have come very close. Of course the proportions and the condimentals remain the same.  Terrapin Station is a worthy homage to "Deep Elem" and an outstanding mild English blend in it's own right.

A bed of natural and lightly sweet cavendish is spiced generously with Latakia and just a bit of Bright Virginia for a cool, mild flavorful and slightly sweet English Blend...with a nod to Grateful Dead Fans!

    Terrapin Station

I had this tobacco with Ahab's Comfort and fell in love with Ahab's Comfort so I haven't had too many chances to try this Terrapin Station. That said I should say it's possible I've downgraded this Terrapin Station and wil provide a much higher rating soon. Its a darn good smoke!

    very nice

Package note of sweet smoky and sour vegetation. Tobacco is a mix cut of black, dark brown, brown and a little light brown. Moisture content is 0k, most pipe smokers will want to dry it a bit. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. Flavoring is listed as Sweet/Sugar, but I couldn't detect a topping. Taste is mild to medium and consistent, with notes of floral, tangy smoke, mild fermented sour, spices, orange zest, wood, peaty vegetation, sugar, herbal incense, toast, tart citrus, savory, mildly spicy, mildly sweet, a nutty lemon grassy background note, and a peppery retro. Cavendish is leading with Latakia, Virginia and Burley supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

This tobacco has a bit of vanilla aromatic flavor, which I really don't like. I just really dislike almost all cavendish, so no surprise there. That being said, it's not a bad smoke, and the cavendish is light. I'll be able to power through the bag, but probably won't order again. If you like a mellow cavendish blend, this will probably be great.

    Terrapin Station

New to pipe tobacco and was lamenting the passing of McClelland tobaccos before I had the opportunity to try the Frog Morton series. Ernie sent me a sample of the Terrapin Station along with my order and I was immediately impressed. Thought I would never smoke anything with Latakia, I was wrong, didn’t think I would like anything other than aromatics, wrong again. It is number one in my rotation, with Ernie’s Scottish blend a close second (Fat Bastard). Great stuff from a guy who knows what he doing and likes creating some awesome blends.

Smooth, silky, mild American-type English. Easily a comfortable all-day smoke, or a great switch-off from VAs or burleys.

I'm a new pipe smoker and still exploring different blends. This has by far blown me away and is a new favorite of mine. The 4oz I initially ordered will go very fast!

    Light But Not Lightweight

Terrapin Station, WC’s homage to their late Deep Elem blend, is an English blend for those who aren't sure about Latakia. The Burley, Cavendish and Virginia all bring a great tobacco taste. The Latakia is very much present but not at all over the top. It is blended in the perfect quantity to enhance the smoke but not bash you upside the head with a smoky tree branch. If you don't think you like Latakia or a heavy English blend, you should give this a try.
